Sichuan is difficult to fit into one short trip. Chengdu deserves time of its own, while reaching Jiuzhaigou takes a separate journey even if you travel part of the way by train. The right number of days depends on what you most want to see and how much time you are comfortable spending in transit.
If you have 3 days: Stay in Chengdu
Three days is a good introduction to the city. You can visit the pandas, spend time in a tea house, explore local food and choose a cultural experience without making every day a long excursion.
If this is your first time in Chengdu, resist the temptation to add Jiuzhaigou to such a short stay. You would spend much of the trip getting there and back.
If you have 5 days: Add Jiuzhaigou
With five days, you can spend time in Chengdu before continuing to Jiuzhaigou. A simple plan is two days in the city, one day for the journey to Jiuzhaigou, one full day in the park, and a final day for the return trip.
Remember that the train from Chengdu stops at Huanglongjiuzhai Station, not at the park entrance. You still need to arrange the road transfer. Keeping a full day for the park makes the journey feel worthwhile.
If you have 6 or 7 days: Give yourself more choice
An extra day or two lets you plan beyond the basic Chengdu–Jiuzhaigou route. You might add Huanglong, spend more time around Jiuzhaigou, or return to Chengdu for another local experience.
The best addition depends on your interests. If scenery is your priority, use the extra time outside the city. If you would rather explore food and culture, keep more of it in Chengdu. You do not need to add a new stop every day to make a longer trip worthwhile.
Plan the travel days first
Before choosing activities, mark the days you will spend moving between places. Then protect time for the two experiences that matter most to you. For many first-time visitors, that means enough time to enjoy Chengdu and a full day inside Jiuzhaigou National Park.
Once those days are in place, the rest of your Sichuan itinerary becomes much easier to shape.
