First Time in Chengdu: How to Plan 3 Days

Three days in Chengdu gives you time for the pandas, but the city is more enjoyable when you leave room for its food, tea houses and everyday life. If this is your first visit, here is a way to plan your stay without filling every hour.

Day 1: Settle in and get to know the city

Start at People’s Park with a cup of gaiwan tea. Take your time: sitting in a tea house and watching the park around you is part of the experience. Afterwards, explore the streets around Kuanzhai Alley, then leave the evening for food.

A guided food tour can make a good first-night introduction to Chengdu. You can try several local dishes while getting a feel for the city, instead of choosing one restaurant and calling it a night.

Day 2: Meet the pandas, then cook something Sichuan

Plan your visit to the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding for the morning. Give yourself enough time to explore the grounds rather than treating it as a quick photo stop. Check the base’s official ticketing information before your visit, as entry arrangements can change.

For the afternoon, consider a Sichuan cooking class. After a day spent sightseeing, preparing a dish yourself offers a different way into the local food culture. Keep the evening flexible for a relaxed dinner or a Sichuan Opera performance.

Day 3: Choose the part of Sichuan you want to explore further

Your final day depends on what interests you most.

If you enjoy history, visit the Sanxingdui Museum outside Chengdu. Its collection offers a look at the ancient Shu civilization and deserves time of its own.

If you would rather stay in the city, choose a closer cultural experience, such as going behind the scenes of Sichuan Opera. It is a chance to learn more about the people and work behind a performance before seeing the art on stage.

A few things to decide before you go

Book the experiences you care about most first, then build the rest of the day around them. The panda base, a museum visit and a hands-on activity each take more time than a quick stop on a map suggests. If your arrival or departure takes up part of a day, leave that day lighter.

Chengdu works well as a first stop in Sichuan. Once you have spent time in the city, you can continue towards Jiuzhaigou or explore more of the province at your own pace.
